Why you should move to a new city for your (next) degreeOn July 2, 2017 by neurotravels
Changing university for my Masters was a tough decision for me. I loved Vienna, I loved my friends and flat mates there and after three years the city just felt like home. Anyways, the feeling that I wanted to see something new, enrol in another university and challenge myself was in my mind whatsoever.
How I decided to move to another country
It was an article in the end, that increased my courage this little bit more and succeeded in wiring my brain towards change. It just popped up online (Facebook probably). I remember, it said how important it was to change university for your Masters and how many benefits it would bring for your career. After reading that article I just felt it and I was so sure – I had to do it! I applied literally last minute for the Neuroscience Master degree in Switzerland – one of the best decisions of my life! If you believe in signs that guide your way – this was one hell of a sign!
(Edit: omg I found the article! It is in in German, sorry for that 🙂 Maybe I can translate it for you at a later point and if you are interested. Click here to check it out anyways)
Don’t get me wrong – it was not easy! Leaving my beloved city and friends, it was scary and weird and first I just felt sadness when I got the letter from Zurich. Congrats- You are in. Damn it. Do I really have to go there now? I think this phenomenon of not thinking about consequences or the negative sides of certain decisions is just part of my personality and my over-excitement, but helped a lot to bring me to where I am now. But yeah – this topic probably deserves its own post.
Thanks to my amazing friends and family I had the support that I needed. They strengthened my confidence to just “go with it” and try it out. You can always go back, they said. This sentence then became one of my favorite motto’s ever and it is still today!
You can always go back, they said.
I did not need to go back
I did not need to go back. It was such an important step for me to move to a new city! It was important for me to grow personally, it was important regarding my science career and it was an amazing opportunity to find new friends, gain new experiences and step out of my comfort zone. Change will always force you to open your heart, open your mind, make it possible for you to grow and will always bring along opportunities you would have never expected, will open doors you never thought would even exist.
So, what is holding you back? If you always wondered if you should change University at some point (or start wondering now), just do it! Just go for it. I know it can seem hard in the beginning. And it is. I felt a bit lonely for quite a while in every of these new cities, even though I always had amazing people around me. The chances of not benefiting from such a change is close to non- existent. You will always gain something from it, even if you don’t like the new city as much as the old one. You will grow personally, you will grow as a scientist (or any other profession!), you will grow in your skills, your pool on amazing friends will expand and your CV will stand out more. And if you ever feel like it was the wrong decision, remember: you can always go back 😉
